Air conditioning terminology has a knack for making the simple sound complicated. “Split”, “multi-split”, “VRF”… all perfectly clear, obviously. Let’s simplify before anyone breaks into a sweat.
Split systems
A split system is one indoor unit connected to one outdoor condenser. Ideal for single rooms, home offices.
Average cost: £1,800–£2,500.
Benefits: efficient, quiet, straightforward.
Downside: one room cooled, one happy person.
Multi-split systems
A multi-split system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit. Perfect for two-storey homes or where you’d rather not ruin the patio with equipment.
Costs vary: £3,000–£6,000, depending on pipework installation complexity.
Pro: multiple rooms, one condenser.
Con: if the outdoor unit fails, everyone’s warm together — a real team-building exercise.
So, which should you choose?
If you only need to cool a bedroom or office, go single split.
If you’d like the whole house civilised, go multi-split.
If you’re still undecided, we’ll happily explain over a site visit
